Supporting a Friend or Family Member

From time to time you might notice that a friend or family member may be struggling with their mental health, and going through a rough time. Often people get nervous about asking their friends if they’re okay, because they’re worried about saying the wrong thing. If you’re worried about a friend or family member, you can use these guides to start a conversation with them.

It can be tricky admitting to others that we need help, so if you friend doesn’t want to talk, you can remind them of the Frederick Irwin Wellbeing pages, that they can check out on their own, or encourage them to speak with an adult they trust. We also encourage you to speak with an adult that you trust, and let them know about your concerns for your friend. This is essential if your friend is making comments that make you think they are thinking about self-harm or suicide.
