A very warm welcome back to Term 3! Despite the lockdown in the first week of the holidays, and the inclement weather, I know that the staff and students really appreciated our first 'three-week mid-year break'. I hope that you all managed to get some relaxing family time over the holiday period.

Term 3 is a very busy term with many exciting events to look forward to. The response to the upcoming School Production of 'Matilda' has been fantastic with all performances completely sold out! We are currently looking at the possibility of adding another evening performance to the schedule. 

We also have Inter-House Athletics Carnivals this term, beginning with the Secondary Inter-House Athletics Carnival on Friday of Week 2 (weather permitting!)

Other notable events include Gordon and Ellis House Days, Founders’ Day, and, in the final week, we have the Year 6 camp in Albany, the Year 9 Outdoor Education Camp, and the Year 11 Camp in Perth. Term 3 is also a very busy and exciting time for our Year 12s as they move towards the end of their time here at school. 

Can I draw your attention to the School Photo Days that take place in Week 3.  As we begin Term 3, please ensure that uniform, and haircuts conform to the School Uniform Policy. We thank parents for supporting us as we try to maintain the high standards that we expect of our students.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

I extend a warm welcome back to all our students and families and in particular the new families beginning their education journey at Frederick Irwin.

Term 3 has lots to look forward to! It is a term filled with sporting activities, incursions, excursions and of course academic challenges. Next week, we are also very privileged to host a number of educators from around Western Australia who are coming to view the Walker Learning Approach in action. This highlights our commitment to providing a high-quality educational programme for our students.

The School’s core values underpin everything that we do at Frederick Irwin. They also form the basis of our behavioural expectations for our students. Indeed, we expect our students to uphold the School’s core values at all times and this is clearly communicated to our students through the Student Code of Conduct. This week Mr Teape and I have met with the children in Years 3-6 to review the Code of Conduct and further unpack the School’s expectations for all children. Additionally, we will have a specific focus on two core values this term: honesty and courage. These values will be unpacked in the classroom and children will discuss how they can demonstrate these values on a daily basis.

By focusing on our School’s core values, we are also developing character strengths with the students. Character strengths (positive traits displayed through thoughts, feelings and behaviours) are important to help our students’ social and emotional development. They help children to focus on what is ‘right’ within themselves. Through exploring the core values teachers are able to help students articulate their personal strengths and values, develop an understanding of themselves and others and help develop perspective, tolerance and respect for others. Research also indicates that academic performance can be positively impacted through the development of character strengths and values. 

I encourage you to discuss with your children how they display the School’s core values in their daily lives, along with their own strength of character.

Finally, I am very excited to remind families that Book Week is celebrated during week 6 of this term. This year we will be holding a Book Week parade on Friday 27 August. The theme for Book Week this year is ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’. More information pertaining to the parade will be provided in the coming weeks.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

I would like to welcome everyone back to Term 3 and hope that the extended break was a positive time for all families. Although the break also included a lockdown, I’m optimistic that this term will be a settled and productive one. Our staff work incredibly hard to provide our students with engaging learning experiences and I’m looking forward to the many achievements our students will accomplish.  

NAIDOC Week 
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Every classroom has been discussing and exploring these topics and we are very excited to have Mr George Walley come and speak to our students this Friday on the significance of NAIDOC Week. Mr Walley is a teacher in cultural education and cultural awareness. He works with governments and schools regarding cultural knowledge and teaches the Noongar language. We are honoured to have Mr Walley visit our school and provide our students with a rich learning experience. I would like to thank Mrs Natalie Burbage for her passion, hard work and organisation of this visit. Our recent incursion in which students learnt about Aboriginal culture and the traditional uses of native plants, is another example of her commitment to promoting cultural awareness in our School. 

Act Belong Commit 
At the end of last term, we held a community afternoon tea, in which Gabrielle Lawlor, a registered psychologist spoke to our parents about the research behind restorative practices and their benefits in schools. We are very proud of the reality that we allow students to learn from their mistakes at Frederick Irwin and Gabrielle did a wonderful job at presenting the lifelong benefits included in restorative approaches. These Community Afternoon Teas are held each term, alternating campuses, with the upcoming event being held at the Meadow Springs campus. I encourage any parent who can attend to do so, as they are a wonderful opportunity to connect with other parents and hear from professionals. 

Book Week 
In Week 6, we will be celebrating Book Week, of which the theme is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. This year we will be having a Book Week parade in the Hall and parents will be invited to attend. The parade will be in the morning and the exact time and date will be finalised shortly. 

Road Safety
Could I please ask that we are all patient when using the parking and 'Kisss and Drop' facilities. Our patience, diligence and mindfulness will ensure the safety of all our students. Our drop-off and collection areas are monitored by staff and I ask that everyone work together to ensure that the dropping off and collection of students is done safely and orderly. I’d like to remind everyone that our 'Kiss and Drop' facilities on Karon Vista are only available for our Kindergarten and Pre-Primary families. I thank you for your assistance and ask that, if you have any questions, please make an appointment to speak with me.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

I recently read some research that determined six world views amongst the 24.7% of the Australian population aged between five and 25. The report (called Freedom, Faiths and Futures: Teenage Australians on Religion, Sexuality and Diversity ) makes for fascinating (and heartening reading) for religious educators.

17% of this group are Religiously Committed, for whom religious commitment is significant in their lives. A further 20% are nominally religious, often following the religious identity of their parents, guardians or their community. Though they believe in God, they do not worship often.

Seekers make up 8% of the total, embracing an “eclectic worldview; seeking truth, which may mean horoscopes or belief in reincarnation or both”. The Spiritual But Not Religious group comprises 18% of those surveyed, finding faith, God and religion unimportant, but are open to the possibility of spiritual matters.

15% are Indifferent, and the final 23% are Worldly, who see no place in their world view for religion, spiritual or non-materialistic possibilities.

On the one hand, I was pleased that so many young people are open to matters of faith, and this sits contrary to the widespread belief that young people are not interested in this aspect of their lives.  Alternatively, roughly the same proportion see no place for faith, religion or spirituality in their lives. Interestingly, fully one-third of respondents fall somewhere in the middle, and see the merits of spirituality, without yet forming firm views on the subject.

Whilst we can draw any number of conclusions from this, this report does suggest that we need to be ensuring that our children and young adults are informed and encouraged in matters of faith, spirituality and religion. A broad curriculum, well resourced and structured, will ensure that those who thirst for spiritual enlightenment in our School will be nurtured. A broader faith-based ethos in our School will also encourage those who are searching (and there are many!) to find food to feed the exploration of their spirituality.

Kindergarten 2023 
This term, applications for admission in 2023, particularly for brothers and sisters of existing students, will be considered for enrolment in Kindergarten at Frederick Irwin Anglican School, Meadow Springs and Halls Head.

Parents who wish their son or daughter to be considered for these years in 2023 should, if they have not already done so, submit an application as soon as possible.

If anyone out there is interested in helping out at our music and drama performances, as well as our upcoming musical, Matilda, we are seeking the assistance of volunteers for our Friends of Performing Arts group.  

These amazing people help out behind the scenes, sometimes making costumes and painting sets, but largely helping to organise the supper we provide at our performances.  

If you would be willing to help out at any of these, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Please email Jenny Crutchett, Head of Performing Arts, on jenny.crutchett@fias.wa.edu.au and she will pass your details on to the coordinator of the group.  

Term 1 Fee Statements were emailed to families on DATE and are due for payment on DATE. 

Families who have not paid or made payment arrangements with the Business Manager by the due date should be aware that a late penalty of $55.00 (GST included) may be imposed. The School has BPAY facilities and we encourage parents to avail themselves of this.

To assist families to budget for their school fee payments, we also offer weekly, fortnightly, bi-monthly or monthly payment plans.  For further information, please contact the School Office.

There are a limited number of spaces available for the Frederick Irwin after-school golf programme. 

The programme is held on a Monday afternoon from 3.45pm - 5.00pm at Mandurah Country Club in Halls Head. The program caters for both Primary and Secondary students and a wide range of skill levels. 

The program begins in Week 3 and runs for seven weeks. For more information and to register for the programme, please contact Daniel Harrop on daniel.harrop@fias.wa.edu.au or 9537 0000.

This year, as part of their library time and Book Week, Year 5 students will be creating book nooks! 

As part of this the Library requires cereal boxes that have a width of 10cm, and are no narrower than 6cm.

Year 6 2022 Special Top

Our current Year 5s will be completing their Primary schooling next year. With this in mind, we would like to inform you that Frederick Irwin Anglican School recognises this and has decided to offer a ‘special top’ to all Year 5 students (2021) for Year 6 (2022).

As all students require a gold polo shirt as part of their sports uniform, we have decided to have this polo top made with the class-lists printed on the back. The cost to parents will be the cost of the polo top plus the printing. 

Please either place your order online via Quickcliq or call into the uniform shop by 23 September 2021 at the latest (no orders will be taken after this date), to order and pay for the correct size ready for delivery in February 2022.

Dry Cleaning your Blazer
The purpose of this article is to provide some guidance and advice relating to the safe laundering and dry cleaning of your Frederick Irwin Anglican School Blazer.

The first rule is that blazers should never be home-laundered. Treat your blazer like any suiting jacket – which is dry clean only. Just like a suit, blazers have high quality fabric (containing wool) together with fusing and lining which must be professionally cleaned. A quality dry cleaner should be used where possible. 

The above said, there are some dry cleaners that do not always dry clean in accordance with garment specifications. The primary complaint about dry cleaning is over-heating. When a blazer is over-heated, the fusing (used to make collars and the lapel maintain shape) will come away from the fabric and result in bubbles, a wave pattern or bulging. An experienced dry cleaner will know this and can prevent this from happening. 

Frederick Irwin Anglican School's blazer manufacturer recommends using a larger-scale dry cleaner rather than small shopping centre-based dry cleaners. Larger volume dry cleaners tend to be more professional and have experience with special garments. If you are in any doubt, do not be afraid to ask questions about the dry cleaner’s practices and knowledge. 

Sound dry cleaning practices will ensure your blazer will last longer.

Lost Uniforms
Can you all please check your children's uniforms for names. If the item is not yours, please return it to the school office as soon as possible, where we are able to give the item to the correct child; if you know the child please pass it on to the owner.

Recently, I have had several parents into the uniform shop, concerned about lost/taken uniform items. 

Please be mindful that all items of clothing MUST have your child’s name on it, this will not only reduce the risk of lost items, which result in additional costs for families, but items can easily be returned. 

Second Hand Uniforms
Have you any uniforms that no longer fit? Re-sell them through the Uniform Shop. Items must be laundered and in good condition.

Forms are available from either the Uniform Shop, Reception or online – details needed:
Name and address – so payment can be deducted from your school fees – once items are sold
Date purchased – this will help set the selling price 

The selling price is set at 60% of the original price, and then you receive 75% of this selling price. 

A new system has been developed to help process the secondhand uniforms into the shop and sell on for you. Unfortunately, any item that has been taken in cannot be returned if either unsuitable or unsold.

MEADOW SPRINGS CAMPUS

Since the start of the term, students from Years 6 to 12 now have access to Grammarly.  This programme allows students to edit their writing and check their spelling, grammar and general sentence structure.

All students can have this installed on their own device. Students can install this themselves by clicking on the Grammarly icon on the School landing page.  Or if they prefer they can seek assistance from the IT Help Desk.

We are excited to announce that Creative Cloud is now available for Years 8 to 12.  

Students can install it on their local laptops themselves, by going to www.adobe.com/au/creativecloud.html then sign in with their school email and password and can then download any programmes they need! 

Creative Cloud is the industry standard creativity suite.  Students can design and publish, create films and animation, edit images and graphics and more!

We are excited to announce that tickets for our school performance Matilda have sold out!  Thank you to everyone who has bought tickets, we are grateful to the whole school community for supporting this performance! 

Matilda is the story of an extraordinary girl who dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.  Packed with high energy dance numbers and catchy songs, this musical will appeal to the smallest and oldest in every family!

As part of NAIDOC Week, the Halls Head Campus have focused on continuing to educate students on Indigenous culture and history.  

As part of this, they were involved in a number of different events.  

On Thursday 22 July, Bindi Bindi Dreaming spent time with Pre-Primary and Year 6 students from the Eco Committee where they learnt about local bush tucker and then spent time planting indigenous plants in the Pre-Primary playground area. The students also got to pick and taste bush tucker, including bush river mint along with nature's chewing gum from the Banksia tree.  

Then on Friday 23 July, the Campus was lucky enough to welcome Mr George Walley for a very special Welcome to Country as part of NAIDOC Week.  During the Assembly, George discussed the significance of NAIDOC Week including the theme Heal Country. 

He then played his didgeridoo for the students and showed them how the didgeridoo worked, which fascinated all of the children. 

After that, the students were allowed to ask him a question about NAIDOC and other questions relevant to NAIDOC.

It has been an amazing week for the Halls Head students. 

On Friday 25 June, our prefects Samuel and Hetben visited the Halls Head Kindergarten. 

The Kindergarten students loved showing them the different areas of our classroom and building tall towers. 

Thank you so much to the Prefects for taking the time out of their very busy schedule to spend time with our Kindergarten students. 

One of our own Year 9 students has been involved in weightlifting for a number of years now, and has been seeing some amazing results!

After some great results at the recent State Championships, Adam McWhinnie took out the Under 15 class and is now the National Champion along with receiving a bronze medal in the Youth class.

Congratulations, Adam!

Reunions are always a great experience, with a tour of the school and a chance to reminisce about school days.

On the last day of Term 2, the Frederick Irwin Anglican School Year 6 Volleyball team returned triumphant to School. The team of 16 players had fended off stiff competition from the other seven teams in their Group, and took home the Shield for 2021.

The team had also won the weekly competition for 2021, and had combined the A and B squads together to enter the Lightning Carnival, held at Mandurah Baptist College.

Surprisingly, most of the players in this crack squad had not played volleyball before this competition. Their enthusiastic approach and commitment to practice ensured they rose to meet the challenge of the other Schools in the Peel region.

The team coach and Chaplain of Frederick Irwin Reverend James Tabor was very proud of the team’s success. “They worked together to achieve an amazing result. I was pleased that their effort was rewarded. The other teams put up a strong fight, but we prevailed on the day,” he said.
