Dear Parents and Caregivers

The last three weeks have been a very busy time for our School.

Gordon House Day in Week 2 was another very successful day. Following on from the House Service in the Rush Chapel for all of our Gordon students, our older Gordon students showed great leadership, running activities for the Primary Gordon students at lunchtime. Thank you to Mrs Watts and Mrs Robins for all of their hard work and organisation, and also to Mrs Joynes and Mrs Baker for their support in the Primary schools.

On Thursday 29 July and Friday 30 July, there were two Walker Learning Study Tours at the Meadow Springs Campus. Educators from all sectors and from across the state visited the School to look at the pedagogy in action. This was a professional development opportunity that allowed participants to see the pedagogy first hand and to have a session that relates the pedagogy to research and child development.

The weather has not been kind to us as we try to organise our Secondary Inter-House Athletics Carnival; unfortunately, we had to postpone the Carnival that was planned for Friday 30 July. We are going to try again on Friday 27 August (Week 6). I know that the Year 12s are very keen for their final Athletics Carnival to go ahead!

Staff and students have been working very hard on this year’s school production of Matilda, The Musical. I managed to catch a little bit of the final rehearsals this week and it is looking so good! I am really looking forward to seeing the complete show. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, due to demand, we have put an extra show in the schedule for Thursday 19 August. This extra performance is already sold out! Thank you all for your support; I know that you are all looking forward to seeing this show performed by our amazingly talented students!

Dear Parents and Caregivers

There has been much coverage of the impact of screen time on children’s development, learning and wellbeing. Just this week a study, conducted by the University of Queensland, was published in The Lancet highlighting the detrimental mental health impact on girls after just two hours of screen time. 

Apart from the mental health impact, researchers have evidence that the overuse of screen time for recreation is also causing some issues in academic achievement, attention and other psychosocial issues. There has also been a link made to an increase in anxiety and depression amongst children and teenagers.

Part of actively managing screen time in children is managing their use of devices; including gaming consoles, iPads and mobile phones. At Frederick Irwin Anglican School we have a clear Mobile Phone Policy that outlines the procedures for children if they bring a phone to school.

Mobile phones should be turned off during the school day and not used for any purpose whatsoever. The School does not condone the use of photographic, video or sound recording features of mobile phones at school under any circumstances. Should students need or wish to contact their parents during the school day they should do so through Primary Reception. Parents who wish to contact their child during the school day should also do this through Primary Reception.

Dear Parents and Caregivers 

The end of the term has arrived and I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable break. I hope it can be a time of relaxation and an opportunity to connect with family. It is hard to believe that we will soon be transitioning into our last term of the year. I’m incredibly proud of our students and although Term 4 will be an important time for consolidation, our students deserve and need a rest. I wish our students a blessed time away from school and look forward to welcoming them back.

Creative Edge
On Saturday 18 September, the Society and Environment Creative Edge team, ‘Black Aces’, consisting of Ramya Mehta, Sofia Novoselskaia, Isabella Romero, Isabella Bright, Luke Willman, Milly Rodoni, Stephanie Hunt and Isla Conkling competed in the State Championships for this academic competition. These talented students presented maturely and were successful in winning the State Championship. We are incredibly proud of them and I would like to recognise the commitment and effort they made in preparation for this competition. The students displayed maturity, leadership and dedication throughout the whole process. Seeing them on Saturday, it was apparent that they have enjoyed the experience and enjoyed being a team. I’d like to thank Mrs Rudland for her efforts and care of the students. Mrs Rudland’s passion is always evident and I’m pleased to also congratulate her for achieving Facilitator Of The Year.

Netball
I would like to congratulate the Halls Head students who were involved in their netball Grand Final on Saturday 18 September. Ava McCann, Isla Bain, Elliott Weatherstone, Ramya Mehta, Abigail Myers, Isabella Romero, Hannah Forsyth, Emily Forsyth, Sophie Harford and Isabel Boonzaaier represented their school with pride. Although the students did not achieve the result they were hoping for, they should be incredibly proud of their achievements and how they played. Watching the students in their games leading up to the Grand Final, it was apparent that the girls had ‘gelled’ as a team and were playing for each other. All of the students are very talented and we are so proud of them. I thank Mrs Boonzaaier and Mrs Forsyth for their coaching and know that the girls will have many more successes in netball in the future. I also want to congratulate Hannah Forsyth, who was awarded a great honour in achieving Best and Fairest in her division.

Year 6 Camp
This week I have had the privilege of accompanying the Year 6 students to Albany. It was wonderful to see students from both campuses coming together and fostering friendships as they learnt about the history of Albany. The students enjoyed many activities including Canoeing, Archery and Geocaching. They have also explored and learnt about St John’s Church, the historical whaling industry, early settlers and the ANZAC memorial. It has been wonderful to share these experiences with the students and I’m happy that we have been able to give our students a wonderful camp experience in their final year of Primary School. I thank the camp staff for their efforts as well as our Frederick Irwin staff, and Miss Sophie Jones in particular, for taking on the responsibility of organising the camp. Although the Year 6 students will be tired from a busy week, I’m confident that they have come home with fond and lasting memories.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Faster, Stronger, Higher is the motto of the Olympic Games. These athletes represent their countries at the pinnacle of sporting endeavors. I am always amazed at how much faster, or higher, or stronger these Olympians are than the rest of us mere mortals.

One thing unites us all though; our humanity, and our human frailty. I was saddened for Simone Biles, as she withdrew from her competition, only to rejoin her US teammates when she felt better. As courageous as it is to do a double reverse pike on a beam, to get back into the competition takes even more courage.

To sacrifice our personal endeavor for the success of another as Cedric Dubler did for Ash Moloney in the Decathlon says everything you need to know about mate-ship, teamwork, and selflessness.

The sharing of the Men’s High Jump Gold medal between the Qatari and the Italian competitors demonstrated that they recognised each other’s talent and skill, and they would rather share a podium with an equal than rob the other of glory.

This is what makes the Olympics so wonderful; it’s not that I can run, jump, hit or swim as fast as any of these amazing athletes, but I can aspire to be as committed, as generous, as focused, and as courageous as they are in my own life. As we watch these amazing men and women compete, we see in them the qualities of humanity that we all aspire to, and that ground them and us. We may not be as fast, or as strong as them, but we can be as noble, as selfless, and as courageous as the best of them.

Kindergarten 2023 
This term, applications for admission in 2023, particularly for brothers and sisters of existing students, will be considered for enrolment in Kindergarten at Frederick Irwin Anglican School, Meadow Springs and Halls Head.

Parents who wish their son or daughter to be considered for these years in 2023 should, if they have not already done so, submit an application as soon as possible.

Term 1 Fee Statements were emailed to families on DATE and are due for payment on DATE. 

Families who have not paid or made payment arrangements with the Business Manager by the due date should be aware that a late penalty of $55.00 (GST included) may be imposed. The School has BPAY facilities and we encourage parents to avail themselves of this.

To assist families to budget for their school fee payments, we also offer weekly, fortnightly, bi-monthly or monthly payment plans.  For further information, please contact the School Office.

Year 6 2022 Special Top

Our current Year 5s will be completing their Primary schooling next year. With this in mind, we would like to inform you that Frederick Irwin Anglican School recognises this and has decided to offer a ‘special top’ to all Year 5 students (2021) for Year 6 (2022).

As all students require a gold polo shirt as part of their sports uniform, we have decided to have this polo top made with the class-lists printed on the back. The cost to parents will be the cost of the polo top plus the printing. 

Please either place your order online via Quickcliq or call into the uniform shop by 23 September 2021 at the latest (no orders will be taken after this date), to order and pay for the correct size ready for delivery in February 2022.

Dry Cleaning your Blazer
The purpose of this article is to provide some guidance and advice relating to the safe laundering and dry cleaning of your Frederick Irwin Anglican School Blazer.

The first rule is that blazers should never be home-laundered. Treat your blazer like any suiting jacket – which is dry clean only. Just like a suit, blazers have high quality fabric (containing wool) together with fusing and lining which must be professionally cleaned. A quality dry cleaner should be used where possible. 

The above said, there are some dry cleaners that do not always dry clean in accordance with garment specifications. The primary complaint about dry cleaning is over-heating. When a blazer is over-heated, the fusing (used to make collars and the lapel maintain shape) will come away from the fabric and result in bubbles, a wave pattern or bulging. An experienced dry cleaner will know this and can prevent this from happening. 

Frederick Irwin Anglican School's blazer manufacturer recommends using a larger-scale dry cleaner rather than small shopping centre-based dry cleaners. Larger volume dry cleaners tend to be more professional and have experience with special garments. If you are in any doubt, do not be afraid to ask questions about the dry cleaner’s practices and knowledge. 

Sound dry cleaning practices will ensure your blazer will last longer.

Lost Uniforms
Can you all please check your children's uniforms for names. If the item is not yours, please return it to the school office as soon as possible, where we are able to give the item to the correct child; if you know the child please pass it on to the owner.

Recently, I have had several parents into the uniform shop, concerned about lost/taken uniform items. 

Please be mindful that all items of clothing MUST have your child’s name on it, this will not only reduce the risk of lost items, which result in additional costs for families, but items can easily be returned. 

Second Hand Uniforms
Have you any uniforms that no longer fit? Re-sell them through the Uniform Shop. Items must be laundered and in good condition.

Forms are available from either the Uniform Shop, Reception or online – details needed:
Name and address – so payment can be deducted from your school fees – once items are sold
Date purchased – this will help set the selling price 

The selling price is set at 60% of the original price, and then you receive 75% of this selling price. 

A new system has been developed to help process the secondhand uniforms into the shop and sell on for you. Unfortunately, any item that has been taken in cannot be returned if either unsuitable or unsold.

Please be aware that when ordering online, you will receive an email to confirm your order, and that collection is to be from Primary Reception or Secondary Reception. 

MEADOW SPRINGS CAMPUS

HALLS HEAD CAMPUS

It is official, the opening of Matilda, The Musical, is tonight! After months of rehearsals, the cast, crew, and band are excited to bring the show to Frederick Irwin Anglican School!

Good luck to everyone performing and helping with the show tonight. There will be a total of six shows with the final show on Saturday 21 August.

Congratulations to everyone, and thank you to Head of Performing Arts, Mrs Jenny Crutchett, and her team for the hard work and dedication to finalise this wonderful show.

We are excited to anounce that the 2022 Year 12 Ball will be held on Saturday 29 January at the Westin Perth!

On Wednesday of Week 2, Primary and Secondary Gordon House students celebrated their House Day, commencing with the Eucharist held in the Rush Chapel.

Primary students joined the Gordon Year 12s and House Leaders, for an extended games lunch, which included face painting, tug-of-war, sack races, soccer, and dodgeball.

Years 8 to 11 also enjoyed a tug-of-war competition! A big thank you to all who helped organise the day including Mrs Watts, Gordon Head of House.

What a great day!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Year 7 students, this has allowed the Year 12 Children, Family, and Communities students to create a large number of beautiful care packages to be donated to Peel Health Campus’ Maternity Ward.

The Year 12 students put on a delicious morning tea to thank the Year 7 students for their generous donations. These care packages will be distributed between a range of new mums and include nappies, wipes, clothes, and other helpful items.

Mrs Matty Macnab and Mrs Mel Brokate visited the Peel Maternity Ward to speak with the Head of Maternity and personally present these donations.

On Wednesday 11 August, Bunnings Mandurah generously donated some items for our new garden beds and helped us set up our worm farm. 

The Kindergarten children loved getting involved and learning about ways we can be sustainable at school. We will be able to add some of our daily food scraps to the worm farm. 

We also hope to get some yummy produce from our garden in the next few months! 

Former Frederick Irwin Anglican School student Allyson Ladhams has recently been appointed as a Judge of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia. Allyson came to Frederick Irwin Anglican School in Year 8 and is one of the Class of 1997.

This appointment by Federal Attorney-General, Senator Michaelia Cash, makes her one of the youngest judges in Australia at just 41! Allyson has had an amazing career since graduating from Frederick Irwin Anglican School, including working for the Federal Government and in other roles as a solicitor.

Congratulations on this amazing achievement. 

Congratulations to Isabel Boonzaaier and Hannah and Emily Forsythe, who have been chosen to represent Mandurah Netball Association, for the Association Championships in Perth in June.  

They were also chosen to represent Association in the South West Netball Championships that were held in Busselton.

Along with these amazing honours, Hannah received the award for Fairest and Best, and Emily the Coaches Award. 

Congratulations to both students! 

Congratulations to Cassidy Moody in Year 6 who has been selected for the WA School Sports 10-12 years and under Swimming State Team. 

Congratulations on an amazing achievement, we are all very proud of you! 

Abbey Humble is a graduate of the Class of 2011, and since graduating has had great success with the sport of Powerlifting. 

Just this year she lifted a total of 140kg in Deadlift at the Victoria State Championships resulting in her qualifying for the National Championships! 

She is also going to be competing in the Strongman Competition in October, hoping to lift a 175kt axel deadlift!
